When the 2004 Little League Season starts next April you will see some new field improvements at the Osborn Facility. The East Windsor Little League has taken the task of building a set of new dugouts on our Majors Boys field. The project started a few weeks ago when our Little League representatives met with the Park & Recreation Board. Project Leader Chris Mickey gave a great presentation on our Dugout Project. With drafted blue prints and plot plans the P&R unanimously approved the project.
The next step of the equation was to meet with the Town Building official Rand Stanley. With the help of Sue Hutchinson and PDS Engineering a stamped set of blue prints were turned into the building department for review. After review from the building department our plans were stamped and approved.
This past Sunday a group of volunteers met at Osborn Field to start the Dugout Project in motion. In a matter of 3 hours both dugouts were dismantled. The chain link fences around the dugouts were also removed. We will meet again this weekend to remove the demolition debris. I would like to thank Chris and Dallas Mickey, Rodney House and Jeff Cote for their help in taking the old dugouts down. I would also like to thank Ray Fahey for helping us find a place to take the dugout debris.
The next phase of this project is having the old concrete foundation removed. Scott Cota of Cota Construction is stepping up to help us in our project. He will be removing the old concrete foundations. This will prepare the site for the foundation excavation. After excavation Rodney House and Frank Wadsworth will set up the footings and forms for the new concrete work . From this point CMU blocks will form the finished wall foundation for the dugouts. There will be two 28ft. steel beams donated by Edmunds Gages of Farmington to start the framing construction phase for next Spring.
The delivery of the 28ft. Steel I Beams happened today the 19th. I would like to thank Ed Davis of Davis Construction for helping unload the beams at Osborn Park. Ed is also helping us out with excavation this Spring.
I would like to thank Scott Cota and Joe Sauerhoefer for completing the demolition of the old dugout concrete foundation's. This prepared the site for excavation for the new dugout foundation work.
Sunday March 7 was the start of the excavation for the dugout foundations. Project leader Chris Mickey (the man in the trenches) and Ed Davis were busy at work preparing the site for concrete form work. All the work was completed in a matter of a few hours. Thanks again Ed for your help.
This week Rodney House and Frank Wadsworth started their phase of the project. The footings were formed and reinforcement rebar was set into place for the concrete. The inspection was done by the East Windsor building official and passed. Today the 12th was the first concrete pour. In a few days the frost walls will be put into place and the second concrete pour will happen mid week. Great job guy's!
Both Dugouts were back filled this past week with gravel donated by Herb Holden Trucking and stone dust donated by Harken's Market. Our friends at Boice's Landscaping are the guys who have stepped up to bat by back filling both of the Dugouts. Boice's Landscaping will also help us out with the grading of the top soil when the construction phase is completed.
The cement block was ordered last week by B & K Masonry. Bill Kazara has been a sponsor of the Little League for many years now. He and his crew will start our block work in a few weeks. Bill worked along with his block supplier in Chicopee, Mass to get us our cement block at a great price. When the block work is completed the Steel Beam donated by Edmund Gages will be set into place by the Boice's.
Today April 9th Chris & Dallas Mickey worked on getting holes drilled in our Steel I Beams for wood plates to be mounted during the construction of the roof system. Our player benches also came in this week and were assembled by Chris, Mike Duff and myself. The funds for these two benches were donated by Pasco's Restaurant and the East Windsor Athletic Club. Thanks again for the support.
A local Fencing company, Advanced Fence & Deck, LLC of Broad Brook has given us a great bid on our fencing to be installed in front of our Dugouts. Advanced Fence & Deck owner Jim Kuca was very generous in donating part of his labor cost to the Little League. Thanks again for being part of our project Jim.
Bill Kazara of B & K Masonry and his crew came out this week to start the block work for the dugout walls. The block work was completed in 3 days with the help of a bunch of Little League fathers with strong backs. It was a great team effort on a Sunday morning to complete out dugout walls & Fencing.
Both of the steel beams were placed by Boices Landscaping. D-Bon Welding followed up with welding the beams into place. Thanks again for your support guys.
Chris Mickey and I got together this past Sunday to prime and paint the steel I beams. A great baseball color, Forest Green. The next step is to start the roof systems for both dugouts. Ed Golden a local contractor in town volunteered his services in putting rubber membrane roofs on our structures at no cost. Thanks Ed for helping put the final touches on our project.
A group of volunteers got together this weekend with the guidance of Carpenter Bill Hanson to start the framing on our dugouts. Kelley Fradet of Enfield discounted our total lumber price by 10%. Framing the roofs should take a few days to complete. Hopefully with a little luck things will be done for All Stars.
The roofs were completed day before the first All Star game. Once again I would like to thank Bill Hanson for giving up his weekend to help us out in the completion of the roof systems. The roofing was donated and finish by Dan Slater and Ed Golden, thank you both for generous donation of product and labor.
Chris Mickey and Rodney House completed the painting portion of the project, thing look great with that Baseball hunter green color, come down and check it out! Thanks again guys.
If anyone is interested in helping make this dugout project a success please contact me through the web site. Frank@ewsports.com . We will be keeping everyone posted on the status of the project. With the help of local contractors and volunteers this project will be a great success!
Sincerely,
